La Caravana | Playa Carillo, Costa Rica

The rainy season in Costa Rica is accurately named, I have been before during this part of the year but had mostly contained my time to the in-land Jungles higher in elevation, here the rain is more manageable and actually quite enjoyable. Going to the rainforest and getting rained on is expected, and rather magical. However, on this trip my husband and I decided to venture down the beach and while it was an adventure that we cherish, we learned just how wild this country can be. Our first stay of our beach trip was a quaint hotel nestled in the jungle on the side of a hill in Nosara. It was minimalistic, but rather beautiful with all the flora and fauna. Our time here however was cut short when we realized the trail to the beach was completely compromised due to flooding, we reached out to the hotel and quickly learned why the room was so inexpensive and why we were the only guests. “That's the rainy season for you..” was the jist of the response. After one of the most incredible dinners at La Luna (the entire reason we came to this area) we decided to cut that stay short and venture on to an area that might not be experiencing as much rain, or at least find a place that would be more suitable for a rainy few days. About 30 miles south we stumbled upon the most unique stay we have had so far in our 4 years of marriage. Just outside of Samara, Costa Rica in Playa Carillo, resides the most perfectly curated airstreams just steps from the beach, La Caravana. The sudden change of plans in our trip ended up being the biggest blessing, I would have hated to have missed out on this experience.

From the moment we stepped foot on the property, we felt welcomed and relaxed, we chatted with our hostess for a while and it was such a joy to get to hear about her story and the heart behind her business. My parents own a small hotel in Costa Rica and I know the ins and outs of making a hotel comfortable. While Costa Rica is a beautiful country, it can be incredibly difficult to find the necessities that make a hotel feel cozy. Many stays in Costa Rica will be a bit plain and cold. To add the warmth and comfort of home, a business owner really has to do their research as well as spend time importing from other counties, this looks like trips out of the country, shopping, bringing things back in large tubs. It is a labor of love and La Caravana’s cup overflows with love and intentionality. The hotel we had left in Nosara was very plain, it had one small painting above the bed and one small basket to complete the decor. The room was white, the bedding consisted of thin sheets with no extra blanket. This was not even a surprise for us since we had stayed in similar places in the country before, we did not expect the quality of my parents hotel just anywhere, but our stay at La Caravana spoiled us and we are already so eager to go back. Our hostess gave us fresh fruit from her trees on the property, there was cookware, coffee, and quality teas. We played cards on the gorgeous covered patio, walked across the road to the beach morning, afternoon and for the sunset, took advantage of the outdoor shower and definitely slept in a little too late due to the heavenly bedding. La Caravana has cracked the code to the perfect bed, I was texting her almost instantly for her bedding recipe, but that, you will have to go experience it for yourself!

All in all, this trip turned into everything we had been hoping for. We relaxed and soaked up as much sunlight the rainy season had to offer and when we couldn’t be on the beach we were more than thrilled to be waiting out the storm at the most unique stay on the Costa Rican coastline.
